Description

Lesson Study originated in Japan in the 1890s and gained popularity in the 2000s following international comparisons. Since then, it has attracted global attention from researchers in educational sciences, particularly in mathematics education. It can be considered a form of action research and a teacher-training process with distinct phases. It begins with a group of pre- or in-service teachers identifying a difficulty in teaching and learning. They analyse the curriculum, plan a lesson together, implement it in one participant’s classroom, and observe its impact on student learning to address the questions they formulated about this identified difficulty.
The presentation will introduce Lesson Study, outlining its nature, its global development, and its effects. We will explore different variants and conceptions of Lesson Study. The discussion with the audience will provide an opportunity to connect with the Hungarian context of initial mathematics teacher education.
