Abstract:
We consider the problem of deciding when a family of matroids on the
same ground set has a unique maximal element. We give examples when
this occurs and when it does not occur, describe how knowing there is
a unique maximal matroid gives useful structural information about
this matroid and offer a conjecture which would characterise the rank
function of the unique maximal matroid when it exists. This is joint
work with Shin-ichi Tanigawa and Katie Clinch.
