Introduction:

The research of the Number Theory Department focuses on several main areas of analytic and combinatorial number theory, including problems of additive combinatorics. Within analytic number theory, the main direction of research are the classical problems of prime number theory, such as various approximations to the Goldbach and Twin Prime Conjectures, the sieve methods originating from the elementary theory of numbers, and the theory of automorphic forms and automorphic L-functions. The problems of additive combinatorics investigated by the department deal primarily with the cardinality and structure of sum sets and difference sets that appear mainly in the set of natural numbers or in many cases in other algebraic structures.

The Number Theory Department organizes a weekly seminar jointly with the Department of Algebra and Number Theory of Eötvös Loránd University. The seminar meets in the large lecture hall of Rényi Institute at 2 pm on Tuesdays during the university semester periods.
