Hungary has been an EU member since 2004 and Schengen Area member since December 2007. Our country applies the Schengen legislation in full. For details on entry and stay rules visit the relevant Ministry of Foreign Affairs homepage.
In case as our visiting researcher you will get a salary from Renyi Institute ('pursue gainful employment') and you are a resident of a third country (outside of the Schengen area), you should apply for a research-type residence permit personally, primarily before coming, at your local Hungarian Embassy.
If its not possible for some reason, you can also register after your arrival to Budapest at the "Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság" (National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing) OR you can start the process on the website, online (here is a guide for the online process).
In any case, because you will visit us for research, they will ask for an invitation issued by Renyi Institute.
Regardless of your choice, you have to visit the National Directorate after your arrival, because they will give you the final documents in person.
Your researcher's visa can be provided for maximum 2 years, and can be prolonged with maximum 2 years again.
For a visa the basic requirements are the following:
- the completed form (see below),
- facial photograph made not more than 3 months previously,
- in case of prolongation, residence permit issued for the purpose of research by the first Member State,
- valid travel document,
- and a proof of the payment of the procedural fee (usually it can be made online).
If your stay in Hungary does not exceed 180 days, you should apply for the "Short-term Mobility Certificate of Researchers". For this type of residence permit the additional requirements are the following:
- form
- A duely signed hosting agreement ('fogadási megállapodás') concluded with Renyi Institute as accredited Hungarian research organisation (download the accreditation),
- Your preliminary agreement with the Rényi Institute ("declaration of intent"),
- In case you already have a valid residence permit issued for the purpose of research by another Schengen Member State, a copy of it.
If your stay does exceed 180 days, you should apply for a "Long-term Mobility Certificate Of Researchers" permit. For this type of residence permit you need the form and the documents listed below:
- form
- Appendix 8
- A duely signed hosting agreement ('fogadási megállapodás') concluded with Renyi Institute as accredited Hungarian research organisation (download our accreditation),

Since you are going to get a salary we are obliged to ask from the National Health Insurance Institute a registration number for you (called "TAJ-szám"), so your insurance status will be covered from the first day of your employment as from the preliminary contract. A "TAJ-szám" can be issued only if you have a valid Hungarian address, that is why as soon as you arrive you will have to have the related declarations signed by the owner(s) of your flat (Rental Agreement or Declaration of Consent) in order to bring them with you to the Immigration Office to pick up your research-type residence permit.
