HUN-REN Rényi Alfréd Institute of Mathematics has announced two new calls for applications, with submission deadlines of April 15, 2026 and April 20, 2026, respectively.

1. Rényi Doctoral Fellowship

The HUN-REN Rényi Alfréd Institute of Mathematics invites applications – preferably from EU citizens – for the Rényi Doctoral Fellowship in mathematics.

The fellowship is available exclusively to students who are admitted to the Doctoral School of either

  • Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), or

  • Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME),

and who begin their PhD studies in one of these two programs in the 2026–2027 academic year.

The purpose of the fellowship is to supplement the standard doctoral scholarship provided by ELTE or BME. (The decision regarding this fellowship is conditional and takes effect only upon admission to one of the above-mentioned doctoral programs.)

Information about specific admission requirements and application procedures is available at:
Institute of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Eötvös Loránd University
Doctoral School of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Budapest University of Technology and Economics

The fellowship is typically awarded for one year and may be extended to cover the full four years of doctoral studies subject to satisfactory progress. In exceptional cases, it may be granted for the entire four-year period from the outset.

The fellowship begins on September 1, 2026, and cannot be awarded to students receiving UNKP, KDP, or other major Hungarian state scholarships.

The amount of the fellowship is up to HUF 312,500 per month, in addition to the standard doctoral scholarship provided by ELTE or BME.

Application deadline: April 15, 2026
Applications must be submitted by email to: renyi.doctoral@renyi.hu
Applicants will be notified of the decision by April 30, 2026.

2. Visiting Researcher Call

The HUN-REN Rényi Alfréd Institute of Mathematics announces a call for Visiting Researcher positions starting from September 1, 2026, for a duration of 5 or 10 months.

The aim of the visiting researcher appointment is to enable researchers employed in higher education to devote their full working time to research, free from teaching obligations. Applications from researchers returning from maternity leave are particularly encouraged.

Eligible applicants are mathematicians holding a PhD whose permanent employer grants them unpaid leave for the duration of the fellowship. (In exceptional cases — e.g., for principal investigators of ongoing research grants — up to 25% employment at the original institution may be permitted during the visiting period.)

The purpose of the fellowship is to support integration into the Institute’s research activities or the completion of a major scholarly work (article or book). Preference will be given to projects connected to one of the Institute’s priority research groups.

Successful applicants will receive a salary according to the Institute’s official salary scale.

Applications must be submitted by Monday, April 20, 2026, by email to vendegkutato@renyi.hu, with titkar@renyi.hu in cc, using the subject line “Visiting Researcher Application.”

Please send the complete application materials in a single email (attachments included if necessary).

Applicants will be notified of the decision by May 26, 2026.
