Two research professors of Rényi Institute were honored at the 200th ceremonial General Assembly of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA): László Lovász received the Academy's Gold Medal, while Károly Böröczky was honored with the Award of the Academy.

“For most of my life, I have been engaged in researching and teaching mathematics. But I devoted six years of my life to leading, protecting, and advancing the Academy as best I could. I don’t believe I did everything well. In fact, I am certain I made many mistakes during those six years. But I was fully devoted, heart and soul. I can state that with confidence. I believe that this recognition (the Gold Medal, ed.) is also for that: that I truly gave myself to it with heart and soul. Thank you very much.”

These thoughts were shared by László Lovász, research professor at HUN-REN Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, after receiving the highest distinction awarded by the Presidium of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences at its 200th ceremonial General Assembly, in the presence of Péter Magyar, president of the Tisza Party and future Prime Minister of Hungary, and Zoltán Tanács, future Minister for Science and Technology.. Only one Academy Gold Medal may be awarded each year, and it was previously also presented to Endre Szemerédi, another Abel Prize–winning research professor of Rényi Institute. A film made on the occasion of awarding Endre Szemerédi the Academy Gold Medal can be viewed HERE. (In 2015, Vera T. Sós, and earlier László Fejes-Tóth and Pál Erdős, also received the Academy Gold Medal, ed.)

At the bicentenary General Assembly, welcome addresses were delivered by Tamás Freund, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and Péter Magyar, President of the Tisza Party and future Prime Minister of Hungary. This was followed by a ceremonial lecture by István Monok, Director General of the 200-year-old Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, titled “Thoughts on the Library: The Founding of the Academy’s Library.”

The Academy Awards were also presented during the festive session.

Károly Böröczky, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, also a research professor at the HUN-REN Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, and university professor at the Department of Geometry of the Institute of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Eötvös Loránd University, was awarded the Academy Award for his outstanding results in several areas of mathematics, most notably in geometric inequalities, which have received significant international recognition.
