Title: The cost of point processes

Abstract:

Invariant point processes form a rich class of probability measure preserving actions of locally compact groups. In this talk I will explain what point processes are and define a numerical invariant associated to them (the cost). We will show that the Poisson point process has maximal cost, and use this fact to show that every point process on a group of the form G x \mathbb{Z} has cost one.
