Bálint Farkas (University of Wuppertal): Three faces of operator semigroups

Abstract:
One-parameter operator semigroups, i.e., strongly continuous representations of the positive reals (or the natural numbers) as bounded linear operators on Banach spaces, are connected to a number of mathematical areas in an essential way. Their classical application is in the theory of dynamical systems, but they are also relevant, for instance, for numerical analysis and for the geometry of Banach spaces. In this talk we intend to highlight their importance in each of these areas.
