Research has not satisfactorily answered the question of which electoral systems are good. One reason is that mathematicians have embraced only a few elegant but peripheral aspects. It is telling that the best reference I can offer is my Hungarian article.
Yet electoral systems set the basic rules of politics, so better systems could greatly improve the quality of politics. In Hungary, as almost everywhere in the world, electoral systems fail to meet even basic criteria. I will show that these failures have had far more negative consequences than are immediately apparent. I will also present our proposals and their mathematical foundations.
It now seems possible that scientific input will also be considered in designing Hungary’s future electoral system. This rare opportunity has attracted international interest across disciplines.
